The English word meditation comes from the Latin meditatio, which originally indicated every type of physical or intellectual exercise, then later evolved into the more specific meaning "contemplation." the late nineteenth century, Theosophists adopted the word "meditation" to refer to various spiritual practices drawn from Hinduism, Buddhism, and other Eastern religions.
Meditation involves the mind which is dissolved and free of all thoughts, a mental "opening up" to the divine.
Meditation is a three step process that leads to a state of consciousness that brings serenity & clarity.There is a list of 108 different meditation techniques.
Below are some of the main techniques:
1-visualization:
Whereby you use visualizations to reach a meditative state, you either visualize something like you relaxing and leaving all stresses behind or some people visualize certain things which they have problems with, for instance, somebody you don’t like at work so you visualize yourself talking to him about all what you don’t like, or you visualize something you cannot do and you keep visualizing that you did it and you succeeded.
2-bathing in protective light
Where you develop the sensation of protecting yourself from anything which you feel could/would endanger or harm you and you visualize again healing protecting light around you.
3- 4-4-8:
The purpose of this technique is to cleanse your body, mind, emotions, and spirit by getting in your system a healthy, therapeutic dose of oxygen and ridding yourself of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and other impurities. You are going to achieve this purification by totally filling and completely emptying your lungs. The 4 - 4 - 8 Pranayama (breathing technique) will achieve a tremendous cleansing and revitalization throughout your entire body. Enhanced clarity of thought and uplifted emotions are always the outcome of this classic method.
4-Astral traveling:
Your astral body is built by feeding yourself what is healthy for your spirit. And that would be good acts, words, and thoughts.
One way to help understand the way this works is to picture your astral body as a balloon. Your kindness, compassion, prayers, meditations, good intentions, and so on, produce astral energy that fills the balloon. When it is full enough, you will rise out of the confines of your physical body. When it is even fuller, you will be able to fly through the solar system. This process continues until you reach a degree where you are free from any limitations whether physical or mental. On the other hand, when filling the balloon with sand instead of energy it will get heavier, and this is what happens when you fill yourself with “bad” energies, emotions and qualities. It is said that that one moment of anger will negate whatever gains months of meditation had brought.
Try the astral traveling by starting the meditation in the ordinary way and then slowly feel that your astral body detaches away from your physical body. Try to see your astral body a few inches away from your physical body ( with eyes closed) and then fly higher until you can see your self sitting down and you see the surrounding from above and then see where the universe will take you, another place, another country or maybe another continent. It is recommended that you plan your trip before you start the journey as the first place which comes to your mind will be the first place your body travels to. After you are done, slowly come down to your physical body and allow both bodies to unite together and let your physical body learn from the experience.

5- healing with prayer
Where you heal yourself & your emotions during meditation by praying to get the positive energy which heals you emotionally and physically.
6- Affirmations
With every inhale, bring into your being a divine attribute and feel yourself being purified. Send the energy throughout your body, mind, and emotions. Exhale fear, inhale courage, Exhale nervousness, inhale tranquility, Exhale hate, inhale love.
7- Colors
You visualize colors & bath in the different colors of the universe. You balance out the
different chakras in your body and balance out any energy deficiencies.
8- Inner child
Inner heart, communicating and getting in touch with your inner child is very important and has its great benefits. Through meditation you can allow the child to come out and express itself, its fears, its joy ..etc. focusing on the inner child during meditation will surely have its great benefits to balance out your body and emotions.
9- Soham:
Soham is referred to as the "Mahamantra", the Greatest Mantra, and is considered along with Om to be the most powerful of all techniques. This was the first meditation technique, both in antiquity and in our own lives. The ancient cavemen, before they had invented language or fire, would sit in their dark caves and have nothing else to focus on but the sound of their breath. Similarly, the first sound we heard when we were in our mothers' womb was the sound of her breath, and this sound has been with us ever since we drew our first breath. It negates the need to rely on any of the words of the languages of the world to use as a mantra. Close your eyes. Close your ears by putting your thumbs in them, or by using earplugs. Focus on the sound of your breath coming in. Associate it with the word So. As your breath leaves, listen to the sound and associate it with the word Ham. To pronounce So and Ham correctly, listen to how they sound. Soham is by far the easiest meditation, it is the deepest possible technique.
10- Forgiveness: With every inhale, visualize yourself being filled with loving, forgiving energy. Inhale slowly and deeply and see yourself as being cleansed. Allow for any impurity to leave your body with every breath. When you see yourself as pure, visualize someone who need your forgiveness and send your compassionate, loving forgiveness to them. Pray for them to attain an awareness of their action and a gaining of understanding of the suffering they have caused. Forgive them in your heart and never carry this with you ever after that.In the same time, In your minds eye, see someone you've caused to suffer and send them your healing, loving energy. Pray that they realize they are receiving loving energy and that they grow spiritually to where they forgive you and all others who have harmed them.
